Week 3 Story: Battle of the gods

The rain starts to pick up and the sound of thunder booms and shakes the ground. A large crack of lightning illuminates the sky, and the faces of Rama, Ganesha, and Indra as they ran through the thick forest.

Earlier that day Rama, Ganesha, and Indra had been reminiscing about the time they went to see a fortune teller, and had their palms read. They joked about how spooked the fortune teller was and how he warned them of a day that they would be faced by something terrible. They tried to get more details, but all he could tell them is that they were given the option to fight or flee, and he didn't know what road they went down. As they day progressed, many other gods started to talk about the uprising of the monsters and demons, which threatened the security and safety of the eternal palace in which they all lived in. Rama, Ganesha, and Indra were unamused by the rumors and knew if that anything were to challenge the authority of the palace, that there were enough gods to obliterate the threat. They knew that this 'threat' was unrealistic or plausible, but still Rama, Ganesha, and Indra gathered their weapons, simply because everyone else was.

They had just finished having dinner when they heard a faint buzzing. As they set down their forks and knives, Rama, Ganesha, and Indra, along with all of the other gods in the dining room, and listened carefully. The buzzing grew louder and louder, and then it hit them. It wasn't a buzzing, but was the emergency sirens warning them of an incoming intruder.

The trio were paralyzed with fear. Had the fortune teller been right? Should they have warned others of what they were told? Was this their fault? Other gods sprinted by them to grab their spears, swords, and other magical weapons. After taking a moment to fully understand what was going on, Rama, Ganesha, and Indra ran to their rooms to grab their spears.

They ran outside the palace gates and joined the pack of gods standing firmly, ready to fight to protect their home. The sky started to turn grey as the cloud of demigods and demons rushed towards them. Again, the three stood there pondering over their interaction with the fortune teller. He knew something terrible was going to happen, and didn't know how it was all going to play out. While Rama. Ganesha, and Indra didn't know either, they did know that they wanted to stay and do their part to protect the palace.

The demigods and demons had been banished from the palace 100 years ago. On this centennial, they planned their attack and were committed to fighting to the death in order to re-gain their status as a god. Leading the charge were Vritra and Yama, two demigods who were particularly upset about their banishment.

As the title wave of demigods and demons approached, the god readied their weapons. Only moments later, the first crashes of swords turned into a huge riot of fighting and yelling. Rama, Ganesha, and Indra formed a circle with their backs together in the center. They fought off hundreds of demons by the time they realized that the many of the gods fighting alongside them had disappeared. They began to grow tired, and did't know how much longer they could fend off the enemy without adequate help. Needing a moment to catch their breath they took off into the woods. After reaching a safe spot, they pondered if going back was going to change anything, or if they were better off running away like everyone else. Rama, Ganesha, and Indra sat on the cold wet ground and tried to decide if they thought anyone else was coming back to help, the pros/cons of staying and fighting to the death, and if they were to run, would they be able to live with themselves?

To be continued next week...

This depicts a battle scene I had envisioned. The piece is called "Indra Leads the Demigods in Battle Against the Demons"  Link to original photo

Authors Note: My story is of my own creation. I looked to stories like Vali's Death, Kumbhakarna, and Ravana's Lament for inspiration. Vali's Death provided the inspiration for wanting to write a battle scence. Kumbhakarna gave me in the idea of adding monsters or demons as the villain. And lastly Ravana's Lament gave me inspiration for the inclusion of the element of revenge.

  1. Wow. This story is very detailed and creative! You did an awesome job. It flows well and reads well. I like your authors note. It helped me understand more of what the original story was and how you redid the story. I like how you wrote “to be continued next week.” You really did a good job on this! Much more creative than my stories.

  3. This story was soooooo good. I am very glad I read it. You have such a talent for writing. The inspiration comes from the Ramayana but doesn't simply retell it. Rather, you were able to create something new that is unique and interesting! I love that you have the story end without a resolution. I love that my curiosity spikes. I hope to read part 2 soon.
