Week 7 Story Planning: Sons of Nature

I wanted to spend this week coming up with something a little more creative than my past story posts, but unfortunately it is taking more time than I expected. I decided to do a story planning post this week to give me the time to gather my thoughts and produce the images I wished to include. While working on my Storybook, I came up with the idea of having coloring book pages that corresponded with the stories I would be sharing with my students. While these Indian Epics are captivating and intriguing, I understand having a lesson all about these stories/their history/symbolism is going to require my students to remain still for a long period of time. That's when I came up with this coloring book idea! I will have images that go along with the each story, that way they can be creating their own perceived image of the story as I read the text. Like the image below, I played with the black/white contrast and produced an image that was ready to color. And as an example, I colored one myself while listening to the film for this week!!

For my story next week, I would like to write a tale that plays off the Pandavas and how they came into being. In my story they would all be yielded by different elements of nature (i.e trees, water, wind, sun, fire, animals). At first they would live in harmony, but just like any other siblings they would often fight over who truly ruled over the forest. They would battle each other and the winner then gets to expand his element into the farthest corners of the Earth. Check back next week to see this all come together!! (I may even do a SoundCloud recording of my story and include an image for you to color that goes along with it!)

As for names I will be doing a play on the god of each element.

Research to be done:
-Names of the different nature gods
-Symbolism of each element
-Proper poem techniques (I will be included different writing styles in this next post)

My own interpretation of the story where Pandu shoots the Ascetic Kindama, who was disguised as a deer . The original image can be found here.

  1. I think your idea to include coloring pages is such a cute and effective way to keep kids engaged. As a super visual learner myself, I’m sure this will be great way to help them visualize the stories they are learning about and will also be a fun and creative activity! I think your idea to use different elements of nature is really unique and will make for a very interesting story. I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  2. I love the time and energy you are putting int to develop incredible content!! The idea with the coloring pages is unique and intriguing. I love to color and listen to books so I think it would be cool to have the opportunity to color while listening to your story! I also think it is cool to include the different elements maybe each one represents a Pandava brother. I look forward to reading or hopefully listening to your story!!
