Week 10 Story Planning: The Game

While watching the movie The Mahabharata, produced by Peter Brooks, I was really drawn to the Dice Scene. I enjoyed this element of battle of minds and skill, rather than with weapons. I wanted to focus my next story on re-telling this story, but adding in the element of super powers. Instead of Yudhishthira gambling everything himself, each brother will get a turn to roll the dice and bring in their own element of expertise. In order to assign each of the Pandava brothers a super power, I first needed to do research on them individually.

First I looked at their fathers:

  • Yudhishthira - son of Yama, the god of righteousness.
  • Bhima - son of Vayu, the wind-god.
  • Arjuna - son of Indra, the sky-god.
  • Nakula - son of Ashwini Gods.
  • Sahadeva - son of Ashwini Gods

Then I looked into the meaning of their names:

  • Yudhishthira - His name means "one who is steadfast even during war"
  • Bhima - His name means "of terrible might"
  • Arjuna - His name means "of stainless deeds"
  • Nakula - His name means "the charming one"
  • Sahadeva - His name means "equal to a thousand gods"

Then I assigned them each their superhero counter part:

  • Yudhishthira - Captain America (he is a natural leader and learner)
  • Bhima - The Hulk (for obvious reasons)
  • Arjuna - Hawkeye (Amazing archery skills)
  • Nakula - Thor (Nakula was known for his good looks, diplomacy, and sword fighting skills, and I figured a hammer was close enough)
  • Sahadeva - Zeus (Because his name means "thousand Gods", and he was a great intellect and astronomer)

Working off these new findings, I will re-create the dice scene as a battle between good and evil, and superhero vs. villains.

  1. Hi, Maddy! I really like this idea for a story. I wrote one about the Dice Scene a few weeks ago, but it was simply over Yudhisthira’s perspective in a modern time underground casino. Your idea, however, goes above and beyond anything I could’ve came up with! I like the fact that you did your research and assigned Marvel superheroes (and one Greek god) to each of the Pandava brothers, and are changing up the Dice Game a little to show all of their superpowers. This is such a clever idea, and I can’t wait to see the finished product!

  2. Hi Maddy!
I really like this story planning idea. You really took the time to outline the characters, the details for each character, and their personalities. This is essential to a good story, and I can see that you have taken time to really think about how to present your characters. It is a really cool idea to bring in superheroes into a story. It is really cool how you were able to connect the Pandava brothers with a modern, more comprehensive type of tale. I will definitely check out to see what you have done with the story. Nice job!

  3. I love the idea of superhero stories! I think it is a very unique idea and I am excited to see the final result. I think that fact you are changing the characters to superheroes makes the story conform to more modern characteristics. I also feel like this modern feeling makes it much more enjoyable to read for people of this generation.

  4. I like the concept that you are going for. It looks like it will be a really interesting and fun story to read. So I look forward to reading it. The way you provided the meanings of each of the names is really interesting. I didn’t know that the names of the characters had such specific meanings. Thanks for sharing!
