Hi! My name is Maddy Thompson and I am a senior Political Science major from Plano, TX. I eventually want to go to law school and this major set me up to succeed wherever I end up going. After graduation I am moving out to Charlotte, NC, as I start my job with Teach For America in August. Teach For America is a program that promoted educational equality to inner-city school districts that lack in teaching staff and resources. I have always had a passion for equality, education, travel, and community service- so this opportunity allows me to play on all of my passions and strengths. My favorite movie is The Devil Wears Prada, and I have too many favorite books to list; but if I had to, I would pick the Harry Potter series. (Ps. leave your favorite book in the comments!) This past summer I traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia and had the time of my life. I love traveling abroad and have many more places on my bucket list. This semester I want to do the Pacific --> Atlantic train ride and see places here in the states that I haven't made it to yet. If you have any suggestions of things to see abroad or here in the US, I would love to know! My favorite food in coffee ice cream and my favorite colors are yellow and grey. I binge watch Grey's Anatomy and historical documentaries like no other, but also like to hammock and study outside when the weather is nice. I am really looking forward to this class and all of the opportunities to get better aquatinted with Indian Epics and growing as a story teller.

Madeline,
ReplyDeleteIt was very interesting to read your introduction. I used to live in Plano for a year and found it quite fun and beautiful at the same time. I have a huge passion for children and once was on an exchange program where I worked with children (like a nanny). Reading that you want to get involved with "Teach For America" is absolutely amazing and I think we need more people like that - who want to help others succeed and grow.
Wishing you all the best for your future endeavors.
Madeline, I won't put money on it, but it is likely we have had a course together at some point. I am minoring in Public Affairs, so a lot of the political science courses are cross-listed for my minor! I love to hear that you are traveled and passionate about kids. I think so many people waste time in their lives doing things they don't care about! I love to hear when people act on their passions! Goodluck with Teach for America! That will be incredibly rewarding I am sure! BTW, my favorite books are self-help books, and while I can't pick a favorite, Leadership, and Self-Deception was a good one I read recently!! Pick it and give it a try!
ReplyDeleteHello Madeline! I think its awesome that you want a make a difference within communities and are acting on it. You're gonna love Charlotte, NC and the east coast. If you get the chance you should check out Charleston/Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. I too enjoy traveling and need to do so more often. I look forward to this course together.
ReplyDeleteOh, you are going to be a teacher, Maddy: fantastic! I hope this class can be a good exploration for you in some of the opportunities that the digital world has opened up for teaching. Some of the most inspiring colleagues I know are K-12 teachers since they are often doing experiments with digital storytelling and other kinds of online creativity that go way beyond anything I've seen with college classes which are actually kind of conservative compared to a lot of K-12 classes. Maybe you can start collecting materials from this class that you will be able to use with your future students: one of the great things about epics and folktales is that they have an appeal that can really be worldwide, and introducing your students to the stories of India would be such a great gift to them! So you can ponder that as you think about what kind of project you want to do in this class. In fact, if you want to do your project in the form of something like lesson plans or a learning unit rather than a standard Storybook format, that would be great; just let me know what you are thinking as we go through the brainstorming in the next couple of weeks thinking about what you would most like to do. :-)
ReplyDeleteHello Madeline! We seem to have a lot in common, I love to travel as well and would love to go to Russia. I have traveled a lot of Europe but my wife and I are looking to do Russia as well. I hope it was fun for you. You get a chance to go to Europe, if you like to ski or snowboard or even ride a sled you should go to Garmisch-Parkenkitchen, Germany, it is awesome, and if you love the sun and water you should check out Manarola, Italy. Those are two of my favorite places that my wife and I went to earlier this month. Harry potter would make number two for my favorite books, right behind the Lord of the Rings. My wife loves Gray’s Anatomy which usually means I’m watching it too.
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie, nice to meet you. I am a senior too! Congrats! Good luck in North Carolina! I wish I could go. I have heard it is absolutely beautiful there. I am not sure what my favorite book is! I love to travel too though and I bet Russia was absolutely beautiful! I am jealous! Best of luck in your future!
ReplyDeleteHi Maddie! I think that’s really cool that you’re going to start Teach For America soon. That a really great program and I have a few friends who are doing it and love it! I also love to binge watch Grey’s Anatomy. It’s definitely one of my favorite shows. I think it’s really cool that you like documentaries. Making a Murderer, Amanda Knox and Gleason are some of my favorites documentaries I’ve watched recently.
ReplyDeleteHi Maddy! I’m from the Dallas area too. I think it’s really wonderful that you’re participating in the Teach for America program. I have a couple of friends who are thinking about participating and have told me a lot about it. As for the traveling abroad, I envy you some of your amazing experiences and hope to make some of my own someday soon. It was really nice meeting you! I hope I get the chance to read more of your writing soon!
ReplyDeleteHello there. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy your future career in helping others through Teach For America. It is important to try and take care of other people as we do ourselves, and teaching them important things about the world. Education is a great field, yet vastly underestimated and funded. Education is one of the big things we take into consideration about our wholesome health; our being. Cultivation of the mind. I am happy to meet someone who see that importance, even if not in the same manner.
ReplyDeleteMaddy, it is great to hear that you already have a job lined up after graduation. North Carolina is such a pretty place! The Devil Wears Prada is an excellent movie! I like that one as well. It is also cool to hear that you went to Russia! I have never been out of the country sadly. Hope the semester goes well for you!
ReplyDeleteMaddy it's so exciting to hear about all of you endeavors, likes, and aspirations. I noticed that we have a common love for Grey's Anatomy. As an aspiring orthopedic surgeon, I really like Torres; however, I love all of the characters. Congratulations on securing your position with Teach For America; this is an amazing opportunity. How do you feel about relocating to a different state?I know that North Carolina is beautiful. One of my favorite books would have to be "Quiet:The Power of Introverts in a World that Won't Stop Talking." This was a great read. The Atlantic train ride sounds so adventurous. This would be a great thing to do before you enter the "real world." Coffee is one of my favorite "foods" as well.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! I bet all of your traveling is fun, maybe some of your own stories will influence your stories that you write on your blog! I have seen that train ride before that goes across the US, but I always wondered if it was worth it. Every time I have been on a train it has been really slow, but if you have the time to schedule days off in certain places I bet it would be a blast!
ReplyDeleteHey Maddy! Its so nice to meet you! It is awesome that you are going to work for Teach for America! It is great that you will be able to help so many students. You and I share a love of all things Harry Potter and Grey's Anatomy! If you love the Harry Potter/ Fantasy series then you should check out the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare! They are awesome and have a lot of the same elements as Harry Potter! I will warn you that they are really long, so make sure you have time to read them because you will get addicted! I hope you are having a great rest of your semester and I look forward to reading your work!
ReplyDeleteMaddy, what a great job opportunity! It sounds like you are going to do some amazing work and really impact people's lives. I started the Harry Potter series but I didn't even get through the first book. I LOVE the movies but I'm not the biggest reader. My favorite book though is by far The Pact by Jodi Picoult (it's kind of a hard read- you'll cry at least 10 times for sure) but I strongly recommend it. I love Grey's Anatomy too! I wish the seasons were longer. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteHi, Maddy! I’m actually super surprised I’ve never commented on any of your stuff this far into the semester. But hey, better late than never, right?? But It’s great to finally meet you! Teach for America sounds like a great program, and I’m glad your life is going in a good direction, especially straight after college. And hmmm… My favorite books might also have to be the Harry Potter series (because who could ever go wrong with that), the Percy Jackson series (if you like Greek mythology), and the Book Thief (if we’re not talking about fandom series). Anyway! Good luck with the rest of the semester, and congratulations on everything!
ReplyDeleteHi Maddy!
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you! I couldn't help but to notice your image information. Did you study at Oxford through the Honors at Oxford program here at OU? I really have a desire to do the program, but with all I have left to do with preparing for my career, I may not get the chance! It's really cool that you have a desire to travel! I have visited many countries myself, and have a blog post written about some of the places I have been. Check it out! I hope your semester is going well, and wish you luck with your future endeavors!
Hi Maddy, it is very nice to meet you. That is awesome how you have a job lined up right after graduation! You are super lucky. Your line of work is such an important one and I hope you have nothing but good fortune. We always need good teachers. I would not be here where I am today without them. Good luck with the rest of the semester and your future plans!
ReplyDeleteI think that your plan and your future with Teach for America is very noble. There should be more people in the world that have passions like yours. I love Grey’s Anatomy and coffee ice cream too! I am not a huge fan of regular coffee but coffee is cream is the best. I hope that you are able to go on the Pacific Atlantic train ride. It sounds like fun!
ReplyDeleteHi Maddy! It’s nice to meet you! My favorite book would have to be all the Hunger Games, and Divergent books. Wow, I also really love the movie The Devil Wears Prada, and coffee ice cream. I think it’s super cool that you get to put all your passions into one career. I wish you all the very best. You’re going to do great!
