This week I tried out three different reading techniques and read three different stories. Here they are paired up:
1) Read Out Loud: Why Dog and Cat are Enemies
-Advantage: The influxes in your voice allow for it to be more of an active story. For me it seem just a little more realistic when reading it out loud to myself and even those around me. Additionally it is more of an experience that you can share, rather than just something that you read.
-Disadvantage: Sometimes you are too focused on reading, that you don't let the words set in. The best way to combat this is to read slow enough to understand everything that is going on.
2) Use a Timer: Midterm Madness
-Advantage: Limits distractions and allows you to browse around without falling into an internet wormhole.
-Disadvantage: I was also constantly looking at the timer. I don't know why exactly, but I was always interested in how much time I had left.
3) Copy-and-Delete: Bucchettino
-Advantage: It helps isolate one portion at a time.
-Disadvantage: The removal of the text made it difficult for me to glance back and remember the exact phrasing that had happened. For me it is often that something that I read later on relates back to past situation, so I love turing back and re-reading and finding that a situation was totally different that I had originally thought.
I have ranked these techniques in order of personal preference. I am an auditory and visual learner, so I preferred techniques that allowed me to read out loud or look at the entire story at one time. I was surprised by the way using a time worked. I occasionally struggle with time management when it comes to reading, so it was nice knowing that I had the freedom to read and explore without the fear of spending a little too much time searching around. Looking back up at my list, I have spelled out the biggest advantages and disadvantages for each technique. I will be using the Read Out Loud and Use a Timer method for the duration of the course. I reading technique that I really enjoy is having a hard copy and underlining important parts or phrases/making notes in the margins. Of all of the stories that I read, Midterm Madness was my favorite!! I really liked her take on the story of Rama and Sita. After watching the film earlier this week, I felt like I had a good grasp on the original plot line which allowed me to be more connected with this new interpretation.
