  1. Hi Maddy, I think your plan to have your storybook webpage double as a tool for teaching is such a great idea. Teach For America is a great organization and I think the students would love to explore the four different topics you have discussed in your introduction. I especially love your cuisine idea. I had a similar lesson when I took a Spanish class in high school and I think everyone really enjoyed not only learning about the culture but also actually being able to taste and be apart of the preparation, which really added to the learning experience and appreciation of the culture. I think your students would love it as well and I hope the school policy doesn’t give you too much trouble. I think each of these four different sections of your storybook will be very unique and add a different flair to your classroom. I look forward to reading more as you continue working!

  2. Hi Maddy! I really think using your teaching career to influence your storybook is a great idea. Your soon to be students will love this concept and the imagination that comes with it. I am glad you plan on using other cultures as teaching aids, I believe it is very important to shine a light on how different our world is. Indian Holidays is a great topic, there are a lot of interesting holidays. Diwali is an especially cool one, it last five days and celebrates the triumph of good over evil. As an avid food lover I am very jealous of the cuisine idea. Eating the local food of places I have traveled is my favorite party and in my opinion tells you the most about the history. Similar to food, music is also a great way to show the history and culture of a place. The indian epics will also be exciting for the students, learning about greek epics was always one of my favorite topics growing up. Your storybook sounds like it is going to be a great one!

    1. Maddy,
I think this website is so creative and I love that it is tied into what you will be doing once you begin your teaching career after graduation! I love enrichment for my children and this would have given them that opportunity.
The layout is very straightforward and clean which is a benefit of Google sites. The bright blue is perfect for your accent. I did notice that under your lesson plan drop down, once you navigate to the “cuisine” page, the header is spelled incorrectly.
You recognized that you will have to check district policy for cooking a meal for your class, are you worried about the holiday lesson at all? My kids have so many celebrations that are not allowed due to differing beliefs in the classroom that they are just not allowed most of the time. Are you afraid of this, or is it a different policy since it is culture based?
When I was looking on Amazon for different versions of the Ramayana I came across this version, the Ramayana: Divine Loophole by Sanjay Patel. He is an animator for Pixar. The book is pricey, but looks awesome for a kids version. It might be something to consider as an in-front of the class type of book instead.
I love the site so far and look forward to reading more lesson plans. Great work! Also, the Pinterest boards are an added touch that would be good for parents and teachers who enjoy that site.

***I deleted my first comment because the link I included to the book didn't copy as a clickable link. Sorry:(

  4. Hi Maddy!

I thoroughly enjoyed navigating through the setup you have chosen for your storybook. The versatility of your project and how you have decided to double it as a teaching method is incredible, and it really displays how adaptable educators are able to be with the technology we have today. I really look forward to seeing how you develop this project. I also enjoyed reading about your background; it makes the project much more personal, and will be really helpful for your potential students to know more about you. Great work!

  5. I was really excited when I saw the title of your project, because I loved The Magic School Bus as a kid, and this is such a clever way of repurposing the epics into something new and entertaining at the same time. Once I actually read through your introduction, I was really impressed by the fact that you’re actually creating something personal and worth investing in with your storybook; in both the Mythology & Folklore class and so far in Indian Epics, I haven’t seen anyone else take a similar approach. All of the extras you’ve built into the site/your lesson plan, like the coloring pages and the Pinterest links, are also really great. I’ll be curious to come and check out the updates for your site myself, to get more background knowledge on the various holidays and cultural details you’ll be sharing.

My only tip is that there’s a typo on the heading for the “cuisine” page, and I only mention that so you’ll find that sooner rather than later. Good luck developing your project!

  6. Hey Maddy! Congratulations on your offer with Teach For America! I actually was accepted into the TFA corps as well for an elementary position in Oklahoma City, but I’ve decided to follow my passion of the law instead. TFA holds such a special place in my heart, though, so I’m so excited for you and I think that your storybook reflects that you have made a great decision to teach in Charlotte! Your introduction gave me flashbacks to the interview sample teaching lesson for TFA! I think that this is such a unique idea to learn about the ancient Indian culture as well as it is a great idea for you to practice your teaching skills! My favorite part about your lesson plan is your children’s version of the Ramayana and the Mahabhrata. I think it’s super engaging and it will be very beneficial for your students to learn about this culture! My only constructive piece of feedback is that some of your students may not have access to technology that could provide Soundcloud, since TFA schools are mostly poverty-stricken schools. Other than that, it’s a fantastic idea and site!

  7. Hello Maddy. I really enjoy the ideas that you have for the project that you are doing. Creating it in a way that you can help young children who you teach is an incredible idea. The idea behind it would be very beneficial for anybody that you get to show your project to, including myself as I see it. I like that you are taking it back to our elementary days and bringing in the magic school bus that was awesome as a kid, kids these days are missing out for sure. I like how your project is going to be looking at different aspects of the Hindu life. That will be cool to see how you put it together. I would consider looking into adding something like movies, which can go along with music, especially if you want to look at it in the lens of Bollywood. I think that would be great to do especially since movies are a huge part of life here in America. This is a great project I am looking forward to seeing how you make it unfold. Great Job!

  8. Maddy, this is a really neat idea. It is cool that you can use your passions and talents and incorporate that into your storybook.I love that you are using The Magic School Bus. I was obsessed with that show and learned a lot from it, like the digestive system. The images are great too. I was wondering, are your stories going to be found in the stories tab along and the rest be extra for development and your personal interest or will the other tabs like holidays and cuisine also include stories? What if you used different characters from the show and had those characters represented by characters from the epics we have been reading. I can see Sita being Phoebe and Rama being Arnold. You know how she always made comments like, "Gee, what a guy". Anyway, great work with this introduction and page layout! I can't wait to see the final project!

  9. That is so cool that you are doubling your storybook as a teaching tool! It is really cool to see someone using their project for something that will be useful for them in the future! I like the categories you chose; they will definitely interest your elementary school students! Plus, you can always add more! That's the great part. Different holidays will be dun to explore with your kiddos because what kid doesn't love a celebration? I also think it is a great idea to incorporate cooking into your cuisine lesson. How fun! You have probably already been told this by now, but just in case- "cuisine" is misspelled on the cover page of that lesson! Will you have a story for each lesson or are your stories for the storybook going to be found in the stories section only? Just a question I had! Oh, and I think it is so great that you chose The Magic School Bus as your theme!

  10. Maddy, I love the idea that you have behind your story. I think that using your passions to create this tale is going to make it much easier for you and more exciting for you to do all of your stories. I am excited to get to read all of your stories and to get to see how you are able to create a story and put into the context in which you would teach it to kids that you teach in work. I think that your ideas of looking at stories, holidays, cuisines, and music is a great way to put these major aspects of Indian religions and epics into good practice. I will be interested to see what all you come up with and how you can do it. I don't know if this is happening to anyone else or if you have not added any stories to your page, but I am unable to read any of the stories that you have, if they are there. Looking forward to reading them though.

  11. Hi, Maddy! I think it’s wonderful that you’re using your storybook as a lesson plan for your future students at Teach for America. You definitely have a good variety of topics to teach from too! I especially like the traditional cuisine day where you can show kids dishes from a completely different culture (and have them try one too!). Your introduction was great, and it definitely set up the reason for your storybook website; however, your cuisine page (which I think is the only chapter that is officially uploaded at the moment) has a great start, but it feels like it’s missing some stuff. What if you added more detail about each dish and describe any significant traditions surrounding it? At the end you could also talk about Ganesha’s opinion on each dish and which one he chose as his favorite. Otherwise, your storybook layout, design, and plan are fantastic, and I can’t wait to see the finished product!
